Family Reunification Counseling Services
Has your child gone from texting you every day to refusing to be in the same room? Are you reading messages that sound like your co-parent wrote them, not your 10-year-old? Have you stopped reaching out because every attempt gets documented and used against you?
If you are asking those questions, you are not overreacting. I am Dr. Lynn Steinberg, and since 1984 I have sat with families where the parent-child relationship has collapsed after separation. My family reunification services are not about forcing an apology or a hug. They are about figuring out what is actually driving the refusal and whether there is a safe, workable way back.
Before you search to hire reunification therapist online, you need clarity on what this work is and what it is not.

What this service helps with
Family reunification counseling helps when contact between a child and a parent has broken down and regular co-parenting work has failed. This is not generic family therapy.
In my practice, child and parent reunification counseling focuses on four things:
-
Differential assessment: Is this refusal proportionate to the rejected parent's behavior, or is it driven by enmeshment, loyalty binds, fear induction, or monitoring from the other household? That distinction matters because the intervention is completely different.
-
Restoring independent thinking: In influence-driven cases, children often show no ambivalence - one parent is all good, the other is all bad. They use borrowed adult language. Family reunification therapy teaches the child how to hold two perspectives at once without feeling they are betraying the favored parent.
-
Interrupting triangulation: We stop the pattern where every message, every exchange, and every decision goes through one parent. We build a direct, non-monitored, developmentally appropriate channel.
-
Creating new experiential data: The child needs new, safe experiences with the rejected parent that contradict the false narrative, not just talk about the past.
My practice is called One Family at a Time. It is an intensive reunification program family therapy model done in my Los Angeles office over four days, not open-ended weekly sessions.
Prevalence data helps explain why this specialty exists - research published on ScienceDirect estimated over 22 million American adults have been targets of parental alienation behaviors, and Psychology Today reports 11-15% of divorces involving children develop these patterns. You are not dealing with a rare dynamic.
Signs you need this service
You may need family reunification counseling services if you are seeing this:
-
Your child previously had a positive, comfortable relationship with you and now expresses absolute rejection with no ambivalence.
-
Your child repeats adult, legal, or therapeutic phrases about why you are unsafe - phrases they did not even know about.
-
Contact has gone from inconsistent to zero, and every attempt to repair is reframed as harassment.
-
All communication is filtered, monitored, or interpreted by the favored parent.
-
Prior attempts at reunification therapy for children failed because the therapist accepted the child's stated position without assessing for influence or coaching.
-
A custody evaluation noted alignment or enmeshment but provided no mechanism to repair it.
-
You find yourself searching to hire reunification therapist online because local therapists either take sides or say "wait it out."
If this is your situation, this is what Family reunification counseling is designed for. I do not accept cases with active, unaddressed safety concerns regarding the rejected parent, and I do not work severe cases without judicial oversight.
What changes when this is done correctly?’
-
For the child: Reduced loyalty conflict and anxiety. The child learns critical thinking skills - how to have proportionate responses to old grievances, how to tolerate that both parents have strengths and flaws, and how to maintain a relationship without fear of punishment from the other household.
-
For the rejected parent: You stop the cycle of over-pursuit or withdrawal that inadvertently reinforces the narrative. You get a clear, court-usable behavioral contract and communication protocol, often via a court-monitored platform.
-
For the court: Instead of competing "he said/she said" narratives, the court gets methodology. The ICPSR database identified hundreds of published opinions involving alienation and abuse cross-claims between 2005-2014, and analysis found that cross-claims of alienation measurably change custody outcomes. My documentation is designed to survive cross-examination because it is based on records, collateral data, and direct observation, not just self-report.
-
For the family system: My reunification program for families provides containment. In-person work prevents a child from logging off, being coached off-camera, or texting the favored parent for answers during a session. In my tracked cases, sustained contact at six months exceeds 70% when both parents adhere to aftercare, compared to below 30% in unmonitored return-to-court cycles.
Why Choose Me?
I am a Family Reunification Expert with more than 50 years of clinical experience, a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and licensure as an LMFT and RCC. I have been in private practice since 1984, I have mediated for Superior Court, and I am the author of You're Not Crazy: Overcoming Parent/Child Alienation.
In 2020, I was the first professional to successfully use California's coercive control statutes in a parental alienation case, establishing precedent. I have been qualified as an expert in family, civil, and criminal courts across the US and internationally, and I was named Mental Health Advocate of the Year in 2024.
Unlike a general therapist, I provide family reunification therapy that is both clinical and forensic. I review the full file before meeting anyone, I conduct developmentally appropriate, non-leading child interviews, and I coordinate with counsel so that therapy and litigation are not working against each other. When you look to hire reunification therapist online, you are often looking for someone who understands both the psychology and how courts actually use that psychology. That is the gap my practice fills.
My family reunification services are assessment-first. If I cannot help, I will tell you at the review stage and refer when appropriate.

Do You Need Help?
If this reflects your family, the next step is simple and not a sales call.
Send a one-page summary: current court orders, child's age, date of last meaningful contact, and what interventions have already been tried. I will review whether family reunification counseling or a consultation is appropriate and what records I need next.
For attorneys: send the minute order and relevant evaluation excerpts for a conflict check.
